SafePlace, a Thurston County nonprofit agency, has been providing services to sexual and domestic violence survivors and their families since 1981. Our sexual assault program is one of the oldest in the nation. We are a nationally recognized feminist organization committed to anti-oppression efforts as the foundation for management and services.  Our agency is dedicated to progressive social justice service and prevention strategies.

Job Summary    

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides leadership to the organization and manages its day-to-day affairs. Guided by the SafePlace strategic plan, as well as the mission and values of the organization, their responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure the delivery of prevention and direct services on behalf of sexual and domestic violence survivors, while supporting and prioritizing survivor empowerment in service delivery and community relations;
  • Work in partnership with the Board to set strategic direction, develop resources and manage the Board/Agency interface;
  • Manage all aspects of the agency from a trauma informed and culturally responsive social justice approach while promoting diversity and equity at every level of the organization;
  • Manage and develop SafePlace employees (34) and SafePlace volunteers;
  • Oversee the fiscal development and management of the agency’s $2.1 M budget, including numerous state and local contracts, aligning financial resources to achieve the organization’s long-term goals, sustainability and success;
  • Build and sustain effective community partnerships.

Qualifications Summary


Education and/or Experience

A Bachelor’s degree involving major study in business administration, personnel administration, one of the social sciences, or related field plus six years of progressively responsible management experience in a social justice, community based, nonprofit service agency.  Ten years of relevant training and experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree.

Knowledge and experience must include the following:

  1.  Knowledge of principles and practices regarding the prevention of sexual and domestic violence and the provision of direct service work.
  2. Knowledge of principles and practices of nonprofit management.
  3. Experience supervising others.
  4. Experience working with a volunteer Board of Directors.
  5. Experience in making public presentations and in public relations.
  6. Knowledge of and ability to interpret federal and state laws that pertain to personnel employment law and nonprofit regulations and laws.
  7. Working knowledge and skills related to providing trauma informed sexual and domestic violence services in a culturally responsive social justice manner.

A documented minimum of 20 hours of management training specific to nonprofits as well as 10 hours of general management training upon hire.  The employee is required to complete the core requirements of the initial SafePlace Advocate Core Training and must complete 12 hours of on-going management training each year.
